Movies Part 3

If it seems like all I've been doing is watching movies lately you'd be right. It is mostly all I've been doing. I was actually going to post more this month but family drama happened and then I just didn't. I'm a chronic procrastinator. Anyways here's a list of my most recent movies that I've watched for the first time.  Although there's always some I forget.

The Decoy Bride

Skye told me about this Rom-Com and I just couldn't help but watch it. It sounded amazing which is exactly what it ended up being.
David Tennant plays a terrible author who's getting married to this famous actress and they're trying to have a private wedding but the paparazzi keep finding them. So Lora, his fiancee, wants to go to a remote location for their wedding called the Island of Hegg.
This location being the place that James, David Tennat's character wrote a book about, and had googled the whole thing and was terribly wrong about all of it. Except Lora thinks this is going to be this beautiful wedding themed after her favourite book.
The paparazzi find her and she runs off to hide, and so the agent she hired to plan the wedding is forced to find a decoy to play Lora so they can do a fake wedding for the press while they go find Lora.
Katie, the 'decoy', is hilarious and relatable and she has blue painted nails and a yellow rain coat at one point which feels like a Coraline reference.
 It's hilarious and gorgeously Scottish.

John Wick 1&2&3

Keanu Reeves is amazing. I loved the humour and the cinematography and John Wick's process of killing people is almost beautiful to watch. It's like a dance.
Also the dog and the puppy were absolutely adorable

Alien

I couldn't tell which GIFs were from the first movie so here's a GIF of the cat they have on the space ship.
Aside from the fact Ripley was fantastic and this all wouldn't have happened if the crew had just listened to her to begin with (probably), the alien is SUPER hard to kill and that's what drew me into this movie the most I think. It's also a very tactile looking movie which has a lot to do with the it coming out it 1979 and I loved that.

Benny&Joon

This was a cute movie. I loved seeing young Johnny Depp going a little nuts, it was hilarious and were my favourite bits of the movie.

Hamilton

What can I say except that I adored it? It was even better than I expected.
Watched this with Skye and it was entertaining when we get to the scene where Eliza is burning the letters between her and Alexander and is singing about burning the memories. Skye said "I'd burn him and his house down but that's just because I'm irrational."

Over the Garden Wall

Watched this with Skye after Hamilton which oddly enough was a great combo.
It's delightfully cute and funny and creepy and bizarre and will definitively be on my list of fall/Halloween themed things
Also it's just absolutely chock-full of stunning artwork.

Sonic the Hedgehog
My favourite line
My sister wanted to see it for her birthday so I rented it. I thought it was terrible. I was kind of sad about it, I love the trope of dad/kid/slightly roadtrip thing character dynamic but I was very confused what they were going for exactly. It was the one thing I was hoping would save it for me. Although I think Jim Carey had fun so that's always nice when the actors have a good time regardless what I think about a movie itself.

500 days of Summer

I've meant to watch this for awhile. I've heard it mentioned a lot and I thought it was an interesting concept with the unreliable perspective/reality. I just don't have a lot of thoughts on the movie.

Devil is a Part-Timer

I haven't actually finished this but I'm getting there. It's ridiculous and I love it. Essentially the plot is the Devil is being attacked by humanity? (I don't remember specifically) and he's losing so he goes to an alternate dimension to await his return to beat them. Which he ends up in Japan on the planet Earth. He realizes in order to make it he needs to get a job and so the Devil takes a part-time job at McRonald's and lives essentially like a broke college student.

American Assassin

Another one Skye told me about. Are we seeing a pattern? XD She has great choices
Dylan O'Brien is always a win. I'm not sure what more I can say except that. Like Skye described him, he's like a young John Wick
I watched it on Youtube in 3 parts and I thought it was the whole movie until I realized it was missing about 20 minutes of the ending. So I pieced the end together watching the full movie that was available but was in Hindi to use that as the basis to piece together the ending clips but in English. I managed somehow it was kind of entertaining and annoying doing that

Dramatics, Self Care, And Feeling Feral

I've always been very stuck in my own head. Too much. I've never known how to not be and it's sometimes messes me up a little when I feel like I miss an experience or I just can't be myself because I always try to take up as little space as possible. Anxiety and the on and off again bouts of depression never helped with that. I also have a terrible memory and this blog is a sort of record for myself. In 2020 I'm slowly trying to pull myself together as a human. Emphasis on slowly. It's strange seeing photos of yourself. Not the posed ones, but photos you wanted to take and realizing you did something and what you looked like to everyone else instead of remaining a sort of faceless thing to yourself. It's been a whole process and there's been a few times I feel like I've broken into pieces of something that needed patching back together. It's just growing up/older I guess? I'm working on it which is all I can do at this point. Spite is an incredible motivator.

I like to think I've also become kinder as a person. Friends definitely helped me start to come out of my shell a lot. Not that my family hasn't been helpful but I'm hoping I'm becoming a little more my own person. Which is something that's sometimes hard to explain.
It's not a linear struggle. There are times I'm sort of getting things done and then there's other times when I haven't been doing anything at all and then I feel guilty but I keep doing it. It's not even always about getting somewhere, most of the time it's just becoming a little more comfortable with myself. Enjoying interests more and feeling less guilty. Embracing things I would have looked down on before because I always hated to be seen as weak or soft which I used to equate to the same thing.
I'm still getting there but again it's a long and a very guttural and sometimes messy process. It's also kind of fun.

Feeling feral is amazing. As someone that feels very under-confident, it's a little boost. It feels like you're telling yourself you're doing okay and you can actually believe yourself. It's a relief really.

There's not really a point to this post except maybe some of you feel the same way.

More Movies

I don't think anyone actually cares but I enjoy posts like this. They're fun to do so I'm doing another one. It's the GIF hunting I think. It's also just a record for my self and again I probably forgot some.

Anyway this is a list of movies/shows I have seen for the first time recently.

I saw the Maze Runner movies (Maze Runner, Scorch Trails, and  Death Cure)
I don't really have that much to say except I liked them and it made me emotional near the end. Newt deserved so much better.

I saw the first 3 seasons of Veronica Mars and then saw the Veronica Mars movie. Loved them. The series more than the movie but I thought the movie was pretty decent as far as it goes despite some minor issues. I loved Veronica and her dad's relationship among a bunch of other things but that was something I really loved early on.

I finished season 1 of the Anime 'Fruits Basket'. It's definitely a Shoujo anime but I enjoyed it

Saw the movie We Have Always Lived In The Castle
There's these two sisters that live pretty isolated in this gothicish house with their Uncle who's a bit crazy. There's a small town and pretty much everyone hates them. The older sister was accused of poisoning her whole family and everyone is suspicious of them.
. I really loved the whole aesthetic of the movie. Skye told me about it and she gave the description that it was gothic and had an idyllic Ghibli vibe at least until the cousin (played by Sabastian Stan) shows up. It has a underlining tension and has a dark edge to it. Anyways I really enjoyed it. I also love how subtle it is. There's a lot going on with the characters but they never go out of their way to explain much. You get maybe a small idea but it's never really addressed. It also has a sort of Series of Unfortunate Events vibe although a bit less comedic maybe? It's currently on Youtube in 6 parts if anyone is curious about it.

Saw the movie Beautiful Boy.
There's the sort of main character Nic. Nic is an addict trying to get clean and his dad tries his best to help him.  It had Timothee Chalament in it and I'd seen a clip before I even knew what it was and was curious. It's not a particularity fun movie but it was good. It has some really cute moments too though. I should mention that it's based on a true story and Nic does make it in the end. I forgot while watching that it was based on a true story and had no idea if it would just be a depressing end.
It's not anything major happy ending wise, but you do find out he's been clean for the last 8 years.
Honestly I don't know what I think of this movie.

This hug got me

Crawl.
Creature features usually aren't my favorite but I saw this with Skye and had fun making fun of it.

Ready or Not
There's the character Grace who marries into a huge gaming empire family who, as Skye put it on her blog, got there by nefarious means. There's a tradition that anyone new joining the family has to play a game. Grace is told to pick a random card and the card will say on it what game they're going to play.
Grace picks 'Hide and Seek' which is the only bad card as everyone has to kill her by dawn.

I didn't realize the amount of humour they packed into a movie like this going in. It's completely terrifying but funny. I skipped a couple 'ritual' scenes but they weren't long either so it wasn't hard.
Anyways I loved Grace. She's an amazing final girl. And Daniel of course. I still haven't got over him and I don't think I ever will. Adam Brody is an amazing actor.

Just one of my favourite shots

Coraline
I've meant to watch this one for a few years and finally got around to it. It was really good.
It scared my dad. He'd gone to sleep when Coraline still thought everything was great and then he woke up to see the Other Mother when she's herself. It was really funny watching his reaction because he had no idea what was going on. I also watched a whole slew of conspiracy videos after. She felt like a final girl and it was something I really loved even though I hadn't expected her to be one. Does she count as one? I think she does.

2019 Little Women is one I forgot to add to my last list. I actually liked it more than i expected to. It took me awhile to get into it for some reason but I think I just needed to get used to the style of the movie and then I was fine. I have some minor criticisms but that's just personal things my biggest thing was I thought some of the dialogue and scenes were weird in a way I didn't think they quite intended but I honestly can't remember the details of what I thought. So you know about as much as I do at this point.

Leave it Alone Photoshoot

So Hayley Williams has a song called Leave it Alone from her new album 'Petals for Armour' and I've been obsessed with it since it released. The whole album really.

Sometimes when I went out walking I started noticing wild roses coming into bloom. I wanted to recreate this look even though I have absolutely no skills and or supplies, but I would put it off because I knew I wouldn't be able to do anything remotely similar and I wasn't sure if my idea would even work. But then some of the wild bushes I have access to were either slowly losing their petals or a hassle to get to and I was running out of time to do this project if I really wanted to do it which I did. I also didn't really want to explain this project to my family because they question my sanity enough as it is.

Anyways this is such iconic look and there would have been so much effort put into this. My attempt is loosely based on this look. My supplies were wild rose petals, a couple other de-bugged weeds, honey, and a cheap paintbrush.
Literally that's it.

So I knew it was going to be interesting to say the least.
It didn't work out but honestly considering everything it was the best I could have expected.
Sorry these photos are terrible quality. It was fun to do the project which is the main thing.
I like to think Hayley would appreciate the effort.

When my brief trial run showed potential

The petals would eventually wilt against my body heat and the honey would roll off my face after awhile. And this all took absolutely forever to put on which is why I didn't end up doing the zipties in my hair because by that point everything was all very close to completely falling off.

The struggle was very real
Can I just acknowledge the honey somehow managed to keep those stems there? I mean clearly everything was slipping and dripping everywhere but considering everything I was impressed.
I didn't get to half I wanted to but honestly I wasn't sure I'd get this far.
If nothing else I laughed at myself which isn't hard but still.

Strange Rambles About Aesthetics and Fae Cryptids

Keep in mind there's a whole slew of other aesthetics I love but this is more relating to the earthy faeish kind I guess? I'm not sure what you'd call it.

I've always loved aesthetics even before I knew what aesthetics were. And magical things and stories. I was the kid that would forget I was pretending and would get way too personally and emotionally involved in whatever it was I was doing. I also was a very logical, analytical child. I was Alice in Wonderland being very logical over things that didn't make sense to begin with. I was one of those kids that told other kids that Ring-Around-the-Rosie was about the plague. I was weirdly obsessed with wild feral things and that never really went away. Even how some pretty things seemed a bit feral. And like most kids I was afraid of the dark, open closets, and underneath my bed.

So Folklore and Cryptids were always interesting before I even knew it was a whole thing that existed. There was so many aspects of it I liked. Nothing of the demonic kind because I hate that kind. I just like the myth, the story, the aesthetic of it. The earthiness of it. I'm not even talking about the dark kind I mean there's such a beautiful kind too. It's those moments watching thunderstorms and heavy down pour. The dew on flowers in the morning.  Old mossy, gnarled trees. The webby aged feel of it even if it's new.

I love the feel of a ghost story. The strange prickle you get when something is off. Or mysterious characters like Rumpelstiltskin who come in with their under-handed deals and careful wording. You don't tell them your name. You never eat the fairy food, kind of like Hades and Persephone.  Don't step into a fairy ring. You never make a deal with the fae because it's costs much more than you think. How there's places you have to follow an exact path to get somewhere even if the path doesn't make sense, because you will never find the place again if you don't. The prettiness and richness of glamours covering the rot underneath making it seem more than it is. Magic having a price.

I love places that feel alive and old and there's part of you that knows to be careful. No one even has to tell you. Places like Ireland (I have never been but would love to) that just seem so wild and untamed and beautiful at the same time. It's in the aesthetics of the seasons.

I love the stories that get passed along. Especially because myths/legends usually have a basis somewhere even if the story is unrecognizably distorted and even if the source of it is silly. It's the intrigue I guess. It's like Friday the 13th or April Fools Day. It's really no different from any other day but it's fun I guess. It's a small thing that adds interest to something completely ordinary.

Anyways, I love it

Things like: (In the aesthetics department)

American Gothic

Dark Academia (not the occult aspect because why?)

The cheesy fun of Halloween

The pastels of Easter and spring

Berries and milk

Moss

Summer nights

Lots of things

Things like: (Cryptids I find fun)

The Not-Deer (My personal current favourite)

The Mothman

Bigfoot

General lake monsters

The iconic look of a Wendigo although it would be totally terrifying

El Chupacabra

I don't know just general kinds.
It's just a fun concept. Like a Halloween or Christmas themed episode in a show is exciting.
Sorry this is a mess. I did label it Strange Rambles so there is that. You had fair warning.

Random Movies

I've seen a few random movies lately. I'm sure there's more that I've forgotten about

Shazam, which personally I thought was terrible, but entertaining as me and my sister made fun of it the entire time. I did enjoy different parts or lines from it though. I could kind of see what they were trying to go for with the movie but they didn't manage to pull it off.

Into the Spider-Verse which I thought was amazing

Peter B Parker is just me as a person through the whole movie

The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. I'm a sucker for the fake dating/fake married trope. Loved it. Couple minor things in there I could have lived without but I really enjoyed it.

Five Feet Apart was sad at least later in the movie, but I knew that going in. I liked it. I'd seen a couple edits and knew Cole Sprouse was in it and it seemed fitting. I have some thoughts but I won't bother getting into it

Split/Glass with James McAvoy and Anya Taylor Joy. I really liked them both. I know it's a terrible representation of DID but that aside I really enjoyed the movies. I'm still not over them actually, I got way more invested than I'd expected. I re-realized that James McAvoy is an incredible actor and I have another monster boi  and final girl I'm way too attached to.

I finished Matt Smith's Doctor Who seasons which I've been dragging out for a hellishly long time but finally binge watched the last few episodes to rip it off like a bandaid. I'm still emotional

March Week

I've been working on a story idea I've had recently. As far as actual written story goes...

This is sort of a rough prologue thing I guess? So maybe it does count as something story wise, not that it matters. This is more for me than anything.

It was the stint of time before March Week in which the smart left on vacation, locals locked their houses, brown bags carried more than whiskey, and the Witchery stocked up on ingredients.

The town had been plagued by a strange phenomenon for the last few years. Sometimes it was just a dark swirl in the sky. Sometimes it caused storms and was a general nuisance to the fishing boats as it scared the fish, and no one could predict when it would happen next. Once it had caused a thick fog to fall on the town for two days. On more than one occasion it was blamed for crimes it hadn't really caused.
One benefit of the occurrence was that it bothered the mermaids who lived in the harbour and were known to kidnap humans. Their, at least temporary, disappearance was a great relief to everyone.

It had been early discovered that no one could do anything about it. It was a freak storm that they just had to weather out. It was wildly unpredictable and sometimes happened for days at a time. At others, it happened only a couple times a year. For the most part they had learned to live with it but it was incredibly inconvenient when they organized a large yearly event- namely the yearly fireworks.

When the fireworks were to be held, there was a period of about a week in which anyone that could do magic tried everything they could to prevent the occurrence from happening- at least until the event was over. This resulted in the generally accepted name of 'March Week' which was more a reference to the phrase 'mad as a march hare' rather than it occurring in the month of March specifically. As no one knew how to actually prevent the occurrence from happening, the magic users grew increasingly wild with throwing out any spells they thought might help and the non magic users growing increasingly irritated with the magicians which led to the madness of what made March Week.

This idea is supposed to be set in a small magical seaside town. Magical in a more...Diana Wynne Jones way. She's been a huge inspiration for this. Probably too much. I have a more or less main character called Ridley Goth who works at the Witchery or lives there, I don't know yet. She has a memory problem so she takes a lot of photos and has notes and stuff.

Things. Details. Stuff.
I have a board if anyone is curious.
March Week
